Transportation from Paramaribo to New Nickerie v.v.
Tour description
You will be introduced to the different districts of Western Suriname such as Saramacca, Coronie and Nickerie during this two-day tour.
The first district passed is Saramacca, where the people live on cattle breeding and the cultivation of rice and vegetables. Saramacca ends on the western side of the Coppename River, where the river is crossed. From here the coconut culture of Coronie is reached, where the livelihood used to be realized.
From the coconut culture, we end up in the rice culture of Nickerie. The capital of the Nickerie district is New Nickerie, which lies over 240 kilometers away in the west of Suriname. New Nickerie has about 12,000 inhabitants and is therefore the second-largest city in Suriname. In this district is the Bigi Pan nature reserve. In this swamp area we find the breeding ground of many bird species including the red ibis, crustaceans, fish and caimans. A nice special trip to the west of Paramaribo!

PROGRAM
Day 1:
We drive on a paved road to New Nickerie. The first stop is in Groningen at the square with the many monuments in the district of Saramacca, whose name already betrays the Dutch interference, about 150 years ago. After passing the Coppena River, we enter the district of Coronie. Whether the welcome text "Peaceful, Free and Friendly" is correct is up to you. Further on, where the palm trees make way for rice fields, you arrive in Nickerie, the center of Surinamese rice cultivation. Ending point: New Nickerie. A look at the Zeedijk will not be missed.
Day 2:
You will experience the highlight of this trip today during a cruise on a corjaal through the largest lagoon in the country, Bigi Pan nature reserve. A typical 'wetland' with creeks, mangrove forests, swamps and mud banks. A 'breeding' Eldorado for more than 120 bird species, including the red ibis, osprey and tern. What more could a birdwatcher want. On the way back to Paramaribo, there may be time to stop at one of the many roadside stalls for fruit and other goodies.
