Transportation from your hotel to cycling in Suriname by air-conditioned car or bus v.v.
Tour description
This beautiful bicycle tour goes through the districts of Paramaribo and Commewijne. The population in Commewijne consists mainly of Javanese and (in the area of Meerzorg and surroundings) of Hindustani, the descendants of contract workers from India and Indonesia, who were put to work on the plantations. The place names and building styles are still reminiscent of Indonesia. The district exudes a peaceful atmosphere and still has clear characteristics of the colonial past. The population lives mainly from agriculture and fishing and still tries to live in a traditional way.
From Leonsberg we cross the Suriname River and arrive in New Amsterdam, where we visit the open-air museum. We continue our route and arrive at Mariënburg, the former sugar plantation of Suriname. Along the way, we stop at a Javanese warung (= Javanese eatery) for a delicious hot lunch. We continue our route along the many villages and return to New Amsterdam, where we cross the river back to Paramaribo.
