We have over ten years of experience as a tour operator and as a Destination Management Company (DMC- 'Destination Management Company'). Because of our special interest in nature and sustainable tourism, we are members of the Tourism Suriname Foundation, a government agency and of SHATA, an organization that brings together companies involved in the tourism industry in Suriname.

General Information

Suriname

With a diverse and impressive history, a special multicultural society, the Surinamese hospitality, the delicious Surinamese cuisine and the beautiful nature, Suriname is a surprising tropical destination in South America. The impressive Amazon region with its mighty rivers, roaring rapids and magnificent nature is an absolute must.

An unforgettable experience is the encounter with the Indians and the Maroons. These hospitable communities have preserved their own culture and traditions and live in the midst of beautiful nature. They will introduce you to their culture and customs during their daily activities.

Language

About 20 languages are spoken in Suriname. The official language of Suriname is Dutch. The common language between the different population groups is Sranantongo.

Hotels

Suriname has a wide choice of good accommodations. Most accommodations can be found in Paramaribo and a smaller number in Nickerie. In the interior of Suriname you will stay at a resort in a lodge. An accommodation in Paramaribo is a good base for a surprising discovery of the country that was once part of the Dutch Kingdom.

And do you want to spend a night in a typical Surinamese accommodation? Then choose a hammock.

Tours and Excursions

If you opt for a multi-day tour, we recommend leaving the suitcases at the hotel and bringing only a backpack or overnight bag on tour. In addition, we also recommend that you bring comfortable clothing and (closed) shoes. Airy clothing with long sleeves is also necessary for a walk through the jungle and to protect yourself from the mosquitoes from dusk onwards.

Car rental

In Suriname people drive on the left. Most rented cars do have a steering wheel on the left side. Driving on the left takes some getting used to, but fortunately you get used to it quickly!

With most car rental companies, the vehicle is insured, often with an excess. The rental price depends on the number of kilometers which are not charged. If you plan to drive a car in Suriname, we recommend purchasing an international driver's license in the Netherlands.

Monetary Affairs

There are several places in Suriname where you can find cash dispensers (ATM). If the ATM has the 'Cirrus' or 'Maestro' sign, money can be withdrawn with a foreign bank card.

Most ATMs have a maximum withdrawal of SRD 1,000 and a maximum of three withdrawals per day. Credit cards such as Visa and Eurocard/Mastercard are only accepted at major hotels, restaurants and stores. In some stores it is possible to pay with a Dutch bank or giro card, but this is an exception.

Water

The water from the tap in Paramaribo is of good quality and drinkable. However, we recommend that you only drink bottled water in the interior.

Bring plenty of drinking water for the road.

Health

When traveling to Suriname a yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. In addition, vaccinations against DTP and Hepatitis A are recommended.

Health care in hospitals and clinics in Suriname is reasonably good. Medical facilities in the interior are usually minimal. In case of hospitalization, the health insurance in the Netherlands must be informed.

Electricity

The power voltage in Suriname is 110 volts. The larger hotels often have 220 volts. Besides the European two-pole sockets, you will also find three-pole sockets. All supermarkets sell an adapter that allows you to use two-pole plugs in a three-pole socket.

Inland, there is no or limited power supply.

Travel Documents

When you travel to Suriname your passport must be valid for at least six months after entry. A tourist card (EUR 20.00) is required. If you leave the country during your stay in Suriname and return later, you need a multiple entry visa.

Persons of Surinamese descent may apply for a PSA document.

Stores and companies

In Suriname, most businesses and stores are open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

On Saturdays, offices are closed and stores are open until 1:00 pm. Government agencies operate on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m./15:00 p.m.
